Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral that forms in evaporite deposits. It was first described in 1868 by Henry How, a Canadian chemist and geologist, after whom it was named. Its distinctive grey veining is caused by inclusions of other minerals within its structure. Howlite is relatively soft (hardness of 3.5) and is often dyed to resemble turquoise or other blue stones — which is why it's important to buy from transparent, honest sources.
