Sunstone is a variety of feldspar (specifically oligoclase or labradorite) whose glittering, metallic shimmer — called aventurescence — is caused by tiny platelets of hematite or goethite within the stone that reflect light. The finest Sunstone comes from Oregon, USA, where it's the official state gemstone. It's also found in Norway, India, and Canada. Ancient Norse warriors carried Sunstone as a navigational tool, using its optical properties to locate the sun on overcast days.
