Star Ruby is a variety of corundum (aluminum oxide) — the same mineral family as Sapphire. Its red color comes from chromium impurities, and its asterism is caused by tiny rutile needles oriented in three directions within the crystal, which reflect light into a six-rayed star. The finest Star Rubies come from Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, and India. Corundum is one of the hardest minerals on Earth (hardness 9), second only to diamond.
