Formation & Fun Facts

Septarian nodules formed approximately 50–70 million years ago, when volcanic eruptions killed sea life and the decomposing organic matter attracted sediment that formed mud balls around it. As the ocean receded, the mud balls dried and cracked, creating the distinctive angular patterns (called "septaria" from the Latin for "partition"). Mineral-rich groundwater then filled the cracks with calcite and aragonite crystals. The finest specimens come from Madagascar and Utah, USA.
