Formation & Fun Facts

Sodalite is a tectosilicate mineral found in igneous rocks, particularly in nepheline syenites. Its deep blue color comes from the presence of sulfur within its crystal structure. It's found primarily in Canada, Brazil, and Namibia. Sodalite was first discovered in Greenland in 1811, but became widely known after large deposits were found in Ontario, Canada, in 1891 — just in time to be used as a decorative stone for the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. It's sometimes called "Princess Blue" after Princess Patricia of Connaught, who chose it for her Canadian residence.
