Formation & Fun Facts

Petrified Wood forms through a process called permineralization: when a tree is buried under sediment and cut off from oxygen, groundwater rich in silica slowly infiltrates the wood and replaces the organic material with quartz, opal, or other minerals — preserving the original structure in extraordinary detail. The process takes millions of years. Some of the finest Petrified Wood specimens come from the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, Madagascar, and Indonesia. The oldest known Petrified Wood is over 350 million years old.
