Formation & Fun Facts

Peacock Ore is actually two different minerals that are often sold under the same name: Bornite (copper iron sulfide) and Chalcopyrite (copper iron sulfide with a slightly different structure). Both develop their iridescent rainbow colors through oxidation of their copper-rich surface — the colors are not pigment but structural interference, similar to how a soap bubble creates color. Major sources include Mexico, Peru, and the United States. Note: Peacock Ore should be kept dry, as moisture can affect its surface iridescence.
