The term "jade" actually refers to two distinct minerals: Nephrite and Jadeite. Nephrite is the more common variety, found in China, Canada, Russia, and New Zealand. Jadeite is rarer and more prized, found primarily in Myanmar. Both form in metamorphic rocks under high pressure. Jade has been carved and used in spiritual practice for over 7,000 years — in China, it was considered more valuable than gold. The Maori of New Zealand used it for tools, weapons, and sacred objects, calling it pounamu or "greenstone."
