Iolite is a magnesium iron aluminum silicate mineral that forms in metamorphic and igneous rocks. Its most remarkable quality is its strong pleochroism — it appears different colors (violet-blue, yellow-gray, and nearly colorless) depending on the angle from which you view it. Viking navigators are said to have used thin slices of Iolite as a polarizing filter to locate the sun on overcast days, earning it the nickname "Viking's Compass." Major sources include India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Brazil.
